Eleventh Step:
Put the foam inside the custom cover of the cushion.
Twelfth Step:
Creating a fold
Thirteenth Step:
Stitching the top and bottom flaps
You will be required to take measurements of your bench. The measurements will give you direction, especially when cutting your upholstering foam. From the bench measurements slightly remove some inch on every side to give a fair room to your completed custom cushion.
Place the foam flat and start marking the lengths.
Carefully slice your foam with a knife or even a good hacksaw.
Now you have your foam cut to suitable lengths. Proceed and take measurements of the height of your custom cushion. Make sure a straight line is drawn to determine the line of cut. Proceed and cut with the knife.
Since you’ve cut the foam, try to properly fit it on the bench. This dry run exercise is meant to obtain the best fit on the bench for your cushion.
In this step, you are required to take the length measurements of the fabric. To get the measurements of your fabric, just take the cushion’s length and add that figure to the foam thickness. For instance, if the desired cushion length is 80 inches and that of the foam is 4 inches then the actual length of the fabric will be 80 inches + 4 inches = 84 inches in total length.
The height of your fabric is supposed to be derived from the height of the foam which is then + to the foam thickness + 1 inch of the seam. The resultant figure is then multiplied by 2. The fabric will be somewhat ‘big’ thus allowing the material to fold around thus giving a seam at the backside. For instance, if the cushion height is 34 and that of the foam is 3 inches therefore the arithmetic goes as follows; 34 inches + 3 inches + 1 inch = 38 inches. The outcome is then multiplied by 2 to give 78 inches in total.
Now, ensure that work is done from a perfect streamed edge. This is important when trying to obtain the correct fabric measurements. From the straightened edge, take measurements of the fabric’s height and cut carefully. Wrap over the resultant fabric in order to face the suitable side of it inwards. Start from one end of the edge and make a streamlined edge. Having some struggle in obtaining a clear edge? Use some clips to place your beautiful fabric in position. Now, take the measurements of the fabric length starting from one end towards the other and cut carefully.
Remember the sewing skills? Using a 0.5-inch seam sew downwards from the end of one edge to the other.
Identify the edge that is folded and mark it using a fabric marking pen. Make sure to attend to the whole length of the fabric.
You have the sewn product that’s okay on all sides, right? Hold the fabric top side as you perform a pulling over to obtain an exact lineup of the seam and the edge that’s already marked. As you do this procedure you will note a diagonal pattern running with the sewn seam. Just put some staples in line with the sewn seam as well as through the entire fabric. The staples are important to hold the sewn seam to the edge marking as seen on the other side of the fabric.
You can now move a ruler downwards from the already created corner, that is, one edge of the fabric towards the other edge. The foam thickness should be equivalent to the number of inches shown clearly on the ruler. Still, holding the ruler? Pick your fabric mark pen and draw a line.
Make a streamlined stitch in a careful manner. Get rid of the extra fabric and leave an estimate of like an a-quarter inch of the extra fabric.
Turning the cover to obtain something like a huge envelope with one edge left open
Simply start from one end of the cover and carefully hold the foam on one side. Put the foam so tight on the inside of the cover. The foam may seem not to have sat well inside the cover and the box corners but it will adjust as you move.
Do you see that one end of the cover? Just do a slight fold of the edge in the inward direction. This will make it lay flat just like someone would wrap a gift package.
With the assistance of a needle and a thread that matches the color of the cover, sew beginning at the top of the seam that runs diagonal to the bottom. Ensure that the top flap is held downwards. Do repeat numbers 12 and 13 for the other end of the custom cushion.
Finishing the ‘Race’
Now, you have your finished and superb custom cushion. You can decide to add some sweet pillows for a perfect outlook. What a day well spent making something fancy for your living room or office.
